Looking back, we will find that all the notorious evil geniuses in history, who inflicted non-stop, unspeakable sufferings on humanity, such as Hitler and his tribe, also had a kind of powerful will.
That type of will power can only create bondage for one self and sufferings and miseries for others. We as educated, well balanced and sane human beings will never try to develop such malevolent will power.
We will always try and develop the benign will power within us, from which no evil can ever be showered apart from good deeds.
Thus, to redirect our will power for the betterment of our individual as well as collective lives, at a certain stage when the will power is taking shape great care and caution should be taken to direct it entirely to God, the Almighty. This could ideally be done through prayers and singing of hymns.
Apart from prayers, comes repetition of Lord's name. Many Indian saints and mystics belonging to the Vedic period were unanimous in their teachings that there is nothing we cannot attain by mere loving repetition of Lord's name.
Whether we are weak or strong individuals, prayers, hymns and repetition of Lord's name will always help us in developing will power and redirect it in the correct way, as these three things waive off all evil thoughts and purify our minds. We must take all care to hunt out all our inner blemishes from their hide-outs and acknowledge them to ourselves and to God within us. A whole world of strength will be gained by us by doing so.
We must never go around speaking about our weaknesses to everybody around us. That way no one will be helped. We shall however speak about them, in cases of need and that too only to our personal preachers and to no one else. The reason is very simple.
You may disclose your weaknesses with a good heart but unscrupulous people in the world around you will try and take advantage of your confessions and harm you. Consciousness of our utter helplessness leads us to self surrender.
Self surrender, when true and complete shatters all our inner bondages which cause failure to our will. There are problems of both fulfilled and unfulfilled prayers. But in regard to the prayers for will power we have a definite imperative of Sri Ramakrishna.
Among the very few things Sri Ramakrishna has definitely asked us to pray to God for, will-power is one of them. His percept in this regard is that we should earnestly pray to the Lord for redirecting our will power in the right direction, so that we may be able to distinguish between the right and the wrong and between what needs to be done and what not. In such a way, we will be able to devote ourselves to the practice of spiritual disciplines.
When we practice prayer, meditation and repetitive Lord's name, God is already with us. And this very fact expresses itself as the purity of mind. This is what is called, becoming strong in God's strength. It is the will of the pure mind that is invincible. Through the help of such a will one can attain the highest peak in one's life!
Moreover it is also very important to pray that out entire will power be united with God's will power. None of us are devoid of will power. Otherwise, we could not have been what we are right now. But it always remains a fact that whatever may be the varying qualities of our already attained degrees of will power, the more the will power directed the nobler human beings we shall become. By God's grace so much always stays open to man.
